1904 –120 years since the Namibian genocide

organized by Barazani

Reflecting with voices from Namibia on 120 Years since Genocide, with guests speakers Sima Luipert and Ellison Tjirera, alongside poetry by Prince Kaamazengi.

This talk features key figures addressing the ongoing impact of the genocide in Namibia. Sima Luipert, a regional and rural development practitioner and human rights advocate, is Deputy Chairperson of the Technical Committee on the Nama Genocide. She works with the Nama Traditional Leaders Association to address historical injustices and advocate for the rights and recognition of the Nama people. Ellison Tjirera, a Sociology lecturer at the University of Namibia with a Ph.D. from the University of the Witwatersrand, contributes his research expertise on social movements and post-apartheid societies. The discussion is deepened by the evocative poetry of Prince Kaamazengi, which introduces a reflective layer to the exploration of these historical and contemporary issues. [Text: Barazani]

This event is part of the event series »1904 – 120 years since the Namibian genocide« taking place in Berlin from August 15th until September 13th, 2024 and organized by Barazani Berlin.

Collective memory and rituals of mourning caused by the human loss and land dispossession experienced by the OvaHerero and Nama peoples under Germany's colonial rule are the focus of Ixmucané Aguilar's artistic documentary—Ondjembo yo Null Vier - Fraitaxtsēs sores tsîn ge ra≠gâ. This work opens a forum at different spaces in Berlin to reflect on remembrance, loss, resistance and resilience, with Namibian voices, performances, short-film screenings and shared Omatangara.

In commemoration of 120 years since the genocide, a series of gatherings will take place, featuring conversations as spaces of memory, poetry reflecting moments of grief through vocal gestures and movements, films bridging the living and the dead, and voices challenging colonial inheritances and structural racism. This series of events engages with history and remembrance, from the Namibian genocide and beyond, highlighting how these blueprints continue to perpetuate ongoing colonial violence.
