Cinema in the spirit of Bandung
Film: Kasiterite | Riar Rizaldi, 18 min. (2019)
The concept of cinema as part of the third Afro-Asia Film Festival arose from the desire to spread material and geohistorical perspectives among the countries of the Global South, which find themselves in a vulnerable peripheral position due to the ongoing effects of colonialism, imperialism and global capitalism. The visualization of subjective conditions, as if seeking a revolution for a new world, which was once the driving force in the Asian and African nations, grounds its practice in the objective realities of the world.
In Riar Rizaldi's film 'Kasiterit', the filmmaker takes on the role of one of Natasha's interlocutors, a solar-powered artificial speech machine. Together they investigate the origin of a material that turns out to be a product of tin mining on the Indonesian island of Bangka. Through this exploration of material development in technology, "Kasiterit" uncovers the contemporary patterns of global technology consumption that are often taken for granted. As Riar aptly puts it: “The biggest myth of digital is that it is intangible.” The countries of the Global South continue to be focal points for the practices of neo-colonialism and global capitalism.
