A practical introduction to critical mapping
Based on a long tradition of counter-cartography in the fields of art, science and political activism, we use the power of maps to make marginalized perspectives visible. The critical mapping is a playful tool to take a look at spatial structures and processes, to question power and dominance relations and to develop perspectives for emancipatory approaches. In a brief introduction, we will present the history of cards and show how power relations can be read from them. But examples also show how alternative mapping can be used for social and artistic purposes. In the subsequent workshop, we want to create maps together with the participants that tell of personal experiences, discussions and visions for a better city.
