At the »Dekoloniale Berlin Africa Conference« activists, artists and academics from former German colonies will discuss together for the first time how a holistic approach to coming to terms with and remembering the history and consequences of colonialism can be developed from the perspective of people from the ex -colonies and what it specifically needs to do justice to its name. It should also be about specific places of learning and remembering, documentation and research as well as academic, cultural and activist exchange. Such places should not only be created in Berlin and Germany, but also in the countries affected by the consequences of German colonialism. What is the respective status, where are the civil society initiatives and actors and where do they put their respective priorities?

In August 2019, the Berlin House of Representatives decided to develop a city-wide reappraisal concept and a commemoration concept for the history and consequences of colonialism in the state of Berlin. The commemoration concept to be created should take the whole city into account and be developed in close cooperation with Berlin's civil society across departments. The participants of the “Dekoloniale Berlin Africa Conference” will also take part in the kick-off event for the concept, which will take place on September 8th.
