»Digital Memory – How is our culture of memory changing due to digitalization?«

The negotiation of history plays a central role in public space, with public space increasingly shifting to the digital realm. Because the interpretation of history is negotiated in social networks, memorials and museums are increasingly present there. Digitalization creates new opportunities for communicating history and thus significantly changes the culture of remembrance. New actors, changing communication routines and new, sometimes younger, target groups mean that new digital formats are needed to communicate history beyond classic monuments in public spaces. Memorials, museums and historical-political educational work in general are faced with the task of developing these.

In this session, Berlin's Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer will discuss with experts on the culture of remembrance from museums and memorial sites what opportunities digitization offers for the culture of remembrance. How can traditional forms and places of remembrance open up in the course of digitization? And where are the limits of digital culture of remembrance with regard to AR/VR technologies, fictionalization and the possible reduction of complex content to easily consumable messenger formats?
