Talking Objects Lab: Unexpected Lessons

Decolonizing Memory and Knowledge

As a prelude to the planned TALKING OBJECTS LAB, a think tank and exhibition series in Kenya, Senegal and Germany, the performative panel event UNEXPECTED LESSONS - Decolonizing Memory and Knowledge will take place on June 11th and 12th, 2021. The program plays in tandem at the Academy of Arts in Berlin, in Nairobi's urban space and on the world wide web. Lectures, artistic elements, talks and discussions flow into each other and interweave with the live stream program from Nairobi. De-Westernization and African philosophy, Black Studies, knowledge systems in music, and a critical look at the Eurocentric narrative in art history play a role in the program.

Featuring sociologist and economist Felwine Sarr, art historian, curator and writer Nana Oforiatta Ayim, art historians Malick Ndiaye and Bénédicte Savoy, sociologist Natasha A. Kelly and the cultural scientist Peggy Piesche, the philosophers Arlette-Louise Ndakoze and Yala Kisukidi, the artists Nathalie Anguezomo Mba Bikoro, Syowia Kyambi and Elsa M'Bala, a film program curated by the visual anthropologist Nnenna Onuoha, and a city walk along colonial traces in urban space in cooperation with the Dekoloniale.

Curatorial team: Mahret Ifeoma Kupka (Museum Angewandte Kunst, Frankfurt am Main) Isabel Raabe (Berlin), Jim Chuchu and Njoki Ngumi (The Nest Collective, Nairobi) and Chao Tayiana (African Digital Heritage, Nairobi)
