information about the piece
In December 1930, a remarkable theatrical performance was shown in the Kliems Ballroom in Berlin-Neukölln with »Sunrise in the Morning Country«. Inspired by black theater productions in the US and Paris, the revue »Sunrise in the Morning« was staged by dozens of members of Berlin's black communities. The staging contributed enormously to strengthening the transnational connections in which Black Germans were active at the time. [Text: Robbie Aitken]
About the scenic reading
»Greetings from afar« is a scenic reading by Lulu Jemimah, a writer from Uganda. Through research and interviews, she contrasts black anti-colonial activism in the 1930s with contemporary debates on identity and activism in today's Berlin (2020s). The play's original setting, "Kliem's Festsäle", has been transformed over the years into a ballroom, theatre, exhibition space, WWI military hospital, movie theater and most recently the legendary Cheetah dance club. The venue is currently being converted for an art gallery. While Lulu Jemimah stitches timelines together through writing, architect and designer Maya Alam documents the remains of these various stages through photographs and 3D scans. Using AI-assisted recoloring, she overlaid these with elements from the 3D scans and newly generated point clouds to create an almost motionless scenography for the performance.
The Q&A will take place after the scenic reading and will be moderated by Tmnit Zere (Nyabinghi Lab)
